Prior to establishing Sheikh Law, Umar held significant roles in the public sector. From 2008 to 2012, he served as Director of Labour Relations at British Columbia's Ministry of Health. In this capacity, he provided strategic oversight on provincial labour relations matters and played a key role in representing the Ministry of Health during healthcare provider contract negotiations. In 2012, Umar joined the British Columbia Nurses' Union (BCNU), where he served as General Counsel and Director of Legal Services. His expertise and commitment to justice led to his appointment as the Chief Executive Officer of the BCNU in 2017. In this role, he successfully led the 48,000-member union through bargaining processes, ensuring that the voices of nurses were heard and their rights protected.

Umar's contributions extend beyond his legal practice and union leadership. From 2016 to 2021, he served on the board of directors for NAV Canada, the air traffic control authority.
